How do I know which tile is the best for each area of my home?
The tile industry uses the PEI rating system to classify areas of use. It rates tiles from 1 to 5. One being the least resistant and five being the most resistant to wear and tear. PEI ratings of 1 are ideal for walls while a PEI rating of 5 can be used for high traffic areas such as entry ways and kitchens.

As a general rule most tile can be used on the wall, but not all tile can be used on a floor.
I hate cleaning grout. Do I need to have grout joints?
The short answer is yes.

Grout offers a number of valuable benefits:
-It gives your floor or wall a clean finished appearance.
-Grout comes in a variety of colors.
-It helps keep dirt and debris from getting in between and under your tile.
-It adds strength and slip resistance to the tile installation.
Why does my natural stone backsplash need to be sealed?
Sealing tile is done to prevent staining from dirt, spills and even the grout used to fill in the joints. Natural stone tile is not cheap, and neither is installation, so protecting your investment is a wise thing to do. Once a stain is embedded in the tile, often, it’s impossible to remove.
What is a rectified tile?
A rectified tile is a tile that has been re-cut to achieve the same exact size in all the tile pieces produced.
What is through body porcelain tile?
Through body porcelain tile is when the same color on the top goes all the way through. Even in extreme applications, these tiles tend not to show wear as the porcelain is quite durable (harder than granite) and the color goes all the way through. It can be used on exterior and interior floors and walls. It’s a great product for high traffic areas.
What should I bring to my design appointment?
Bring a picture of your space. If you are building or remodeling, bring a drawing of the proposed area. When redoing a kitchen or bathroom it is important for the designer to see any existing cabinetry, flooring or other features that are going to remain as is. If you have already selected an element for your space, bring a sample or a picture.

Countertop, cabinets and paint color samples are key in helping your design consultant envision your space.
What is the difference between unfinished and prefinished hardwood?
Unfinished hardwood is installed in your home and then the finish is applied, which can be matched to existing or surrounding hardwood floors. Prefinished hardwood is stained and finished at the factory under carefully controlled conditions, which provides a more consistent appearance and superior durability.

Prefinished floors allow you to enjoy your new floor much sooner, without the dust, noise, and time spent waiting for finishes to be applied and cured.
Should I expect color variation in my hardwood floor?
Yes, there is a natural variation in hardwood. Some species have more variation than others. Each piece will not be identical in color or grain pattern.
Can I install hardwood floors in any room in my house?
Solid and engineered hardwood floors are a great choice for most rooms in your house, but are not recommended for rooms that are moisture prone such as bathrooms, laundry rooms and mudrooms. Solid hardwood should also not be installed in a basement. In basements, engineered hardwood is a better option.
What is the difference between solid hardwood and engineered hardwood?
A solid hardwood board is milled from one piece of wood and is typically 3/4" thick (although some come in 5/16" thickness). These products can only be installed on or above ground. Solid hardwood should not be installed below ground level, such as in a basement or walk-out basement because it can react strongly to moisture or high humidity.

A major benefit of solid hardwood is it can typically be sanded or refinished more than one time. It must be installed with nails, staples or glue.
An engineered hardwood floor is made up of layers (plies) of real wood that are adhered together to make the board more structurally stable than solid hardwood. Whether (and how many times) engineered hardwood can be sanded and refinished depends on the thickness of the top layer of wood. Refer to the warranty for your floor to determine the feasibility of being refinished.

A benefit of engineered hardwood is that it can be installed on any level, even in basements, and typically has multiple choices for installation, such as floating, gluing or nailing/stapling down.

Is there a difference between LVT and LVP?
LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tile) and LVP (Luxury Vinyl Plank) are two different types of luxury vinyl flooring. LVT is vinyl flooring designed in a tile shape, whereas LVP is vinyl flooring designed in planks to resemble traditional hardwood floor planks.
Can luxury vinyl tile or plank be installed over my existing flooring?
Luxury vinyl tile flooring is a stylish and durable solution that can be installed over your current tile, which will save you both time and money. LVT is not only low maintenance, but it's super easy to install, too.
What does mil and mm mean when looking at luxury vinyl?
A mil is a measurement that equals one-thousandth of an inch, or 0.001 inch. One mil also equals 0.0254 mm (millimeter) A mil is not the same thickness as a millimeter. The term "mil" is not an abbreviation but a unit of measure.

Millimeter or mm is used to show the entire thickness of a Luxury Vinyl plank or tile.
Mil is used to show the thickness of the wear layer on the top of the luxury vinyl plank or tile.
How long do LVT floors last?
If you purchase high quality, thick luxury vinyl flooring--whether plank or tile and have it installed correctly and maintain it well, you can expect a lifespan of 25 or 30 years.

Most manufacturers offer a 15 to 20 year lifetime warranty.
What is carpet made out of?
Carpets are usually made from one of two popular materials: nylon and polyester. There are several other types as well, but these are the most common options that you’re likely to come across.

Here are your options:

Nylon Fibers:
Nylon remains the most popular carpet fiber. It is durable, static-free, and well-suited for indoor use. However, it does fade in direct sunlight, so it shouldn’t be used outdoors. Often it’s treated with a stain-resistant technology to keep it looking beautiful through all of life’s messes.

Nylon carpets also have a Class 1 fire rating, which means they melt instead of burning. This makes them extra safe. As well as great for installation in commercial spaces

Polyester Fibers:
Polyester is mostly made from recycled materials, which is a plus if you want an eco-friendly carpet. This fiber material is rising in popularity and giving nylon a run for its money.

It’s cheaper than nylon, and is just as durable. It’s extremely fade- and stain-resistant.

Polyester also usually has the widest range of color choices so your floor can be anything from bright pink to a neutral brown.
What are the 6 types of carpeting?
The six types of carpet are textured, plush, frieze, cable, Berber, and cut-and-loop. Each type has its own look and performance conditions.
Should carpet be lighter or darker than walls?
Your wall color should be two tones lighter than your carpet. If you have dark walls, you can also go a few tones lighter with your carpet. Since it's much easier to change your wall color than your carpet, choose your carpet color first and then match your wall color.
What is the most durable carpet for high traffic areas?
Polyester carpeting is an especially good option for high-traffic areas because it is durable and easy to clean. Polyester carpeting is made from artificial fibers that are heat resistant and is resistant to crushing, matting, and static.
"A dear friend recommended that we go to Marty's to look at flooring. When we arrived, Marty was with a friend and immediately stopped his conversation and introduced himself and his friend. He asked how he could help and invited us to look around. We returned later, met with Cherie, and selected flooring for the kitchen. The flooring was ordered and promptly installed the following week. Ann has allergies and the installers, Scott, Brandon, and Malcolm, were cautious, courteous, and attentive during the entire project. By mid-afternoon the new floor was complete and the site thoroughly cleaned. While the installers were on-site we discussed the kitchen back splashes we had seen while at Marty's with Cherie. We moved forward and once again received excellent service from everyone involved. We have been thoroughly pleased with Marty's Flooring Center."
